Hemingway’s Cuba

He looked at the sky and saw the white cumulus built like friendly piles of ice cream and high above were the thin feathers of the cirrus against the high September sky.”

That’s a line from Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. One can actually see the wispy the clouds in the sky while reading it.

In 1928, “Papa” Hemingway and his family set sail from their Florida home toward Spain. Along the way, they stopped in Havana, Cuba and stayed for three days. Well, it was more than enough for Hemingway. He had fallen madly in love with Cuba.

Four years later, in 1932, Hemingway came back and brought along a few friends, one of which was a master fisherman who showed him how to catch fish. He loved it so much, he purchased a fishing boat and returned the next year. He even wrote an article entitled, “Marlin off the Morro: A Cuban Letter.” It was published in Esquire Magazine in 1933. In 1940, Hemingway and his new wife purchased a home in Havana and named the property “Finca Vigia,” which means or “lookout house.” The two lived there along with their many cats for the next twenty years. While living at Finca Vigia, he wrote his most acclaimed works, The Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bells Toll.

Hemingway went on to become a renownedCuban regular, even after relations with the United States crumbled. He fished nearly every day, mingled with residents at local bars, and reported on goings on. He even asked the Cuban government to let him turn one of his boats into a fighting ship so he could defend the shores against German submarines.

In 1961, after Hemingway’s death, his possessions sadly ruined. Fortunately, however, the Cubans recently restored his home and the public can now see all his beloved souvenirs, hunting awards, personal artifacts, and majestic library. Hishome is now listed on both the World Monuments Fund list of the 100 Most Endangered Sites, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 11 Most Endangered Places list.

Cuban Carnival Tour

His personal items are housed in the Museo Historico de la Revolucion and the Monumento a la Toma del Tren Blindado marks the site of his final battle with the Batista troops.

Santa Clara is also home to Teatro de la Caridad (circa 1885), one of Cuba's few surviving theaters. Much of it remains in original condition.

·         Exploration guidée du centre historique de La Vieille Havane, (patrimoine de l'humanité et ville merveille), en visitant ses places coloniales, le Parc Central, le capitole et le musée de la Révolution.

·         Excursion poru La Havane la moins touristique avec possitilité d'échange avec la vie quotidienne des Cubains.

·         Visite d'une manufacture de tabac.

·         Promenade à travers La Havane moderne (Hôtel National, Rue 23 “Le Broadway havanais”, Place de la Révolution).

·         Dîner inclus dans un restaurnat de type paladar.

·         Nuit et souper libres.

·         Logement dans une casa particular à La Havane avec petit déjeuner inclus.

Jour 3

·         Sortie pour Viñales.

·         Bref arrêt dans le mirador de Los Jazmines avec vue panoramique sur la vallée de Viñales.

·         Chevauchée de trois heures à travers du Parc national de Viñales, déclaré par Unesco comme Paysage culturel de l'humanité, ce qui inclut:

·         Bain dans les piscines naturelles des Cuevas del Palmarito.

·         Visite à une Vega pour connaître le processus d'élaboration du tabac.

·         Brève explication sur le processus du café.

·         Dîner dans un restaurant panoramique.

·         Retour à La Havane. Souper libre.

·         Parcours pour La Havane pendant une heure dans des voitures d'époque. Disponible seulement pour ceux qui ont choisi des voitures modernes et luxe.

·         Spectacle optionnel chez Tropicana ou concert du Buena Vista Social Club.

Jour 4

·         Sortie vers Cienfuegos. Dans le parcours, arrêt pour le Ciénaga de Zapata (réserve de la biosphère et Sitio Ramsar) qui inclut:

·         Élevage de perroquets et crocodiles.

·         Dîner à Pálpite dans un restaurant de type paladar.

·         Temps disponible pour snorkelling ou bain dans Caleta Buena pour profiter de la Mer des Caraïbes (plongée optionnelle)

·         Visite au centre historique de Cienfuegos, déclaré par Unesco comme patrimoine de l'humanité.

·         Souper libre.

·         Logement dans une casa particular à Cienfuegos avec petit déjeuner inclus.

Jour 5

·         Sortie vers Trinidad.

·         Visite au centre historique de Trinidad, déclaré par Unesco comme patrimoine de l'humanité.

·         Dîner à Trinidad dans un restaurant de type paladar.

·         Transfer ver l'aéroport de La Havane, Varadero ou lieu d'extension.
