Casa particulares (Spanish for “private house”) provide most of the accommodations throughout the vacation.

Casa Particulares

In 1997, the Cuban government let citizens rent rooms homes. The casa particulares provided a new source of income to the citizens.

An upside-down anchor marks each registered casa particular in Cuba. Such means that the home metestablished standards of quality, such as hot water, air conditioning, refrigerator, TV, and overall comfort.

The Upside-Down Anchor

Spanish charts in the 1700s contain upside-down anchors. Some say it marked the day a fisherman decided to return home. The symbol is still used today, on clothes, hats, and even as tattoos. Some say that it means the workday is over and that it’s time to have fun with friends. So, when you enter a casa particular with an upside-down anchor, you are going home, with friends, and you are certain to have fun.

Advantages

Casas particulares offer numerous advantages over fancy, more expensive hotels. Those advantages include:
  • the ability to develop an honest relationship with Cuban citizens and actually observe the culture.
  • learning inside information about places to visit and things to do.
  • being treated by people who are known to be extremely friendly, helpful, and considerate.
  • staying in places that sustain a continued reputation for being clean and well-maintained.
  • enjoying homemade meals that are hearty and delicious. Food is usually included in the price. When it’s not, is usually only just a few dollars.
  • low fees. The average cost of staying in a casa particular equals about $25-$25 U.S. Dollars – a fraction of what it costs to stay in a hotel, many of which are considered overpriced.
  • enjoyinga more genuine Cuban experience.

A casa particular is much more than just a room in a person’s home or apartment. They are quite nice and very beautiful and the rooms are spacious and lovely. Though you can intermingle and enjoy the host family, you can also decide to have as much privacy as you wish. Guests have their own keys and many have private entrances. Many also offer private bathrooms and terraces, on which you can watch gorgeous sunsets.
